The Consulate of Italy in Cape Town, as part of the ninth edition of the Italian Cuisine Week, supported the certificate-giving ceremony of the Eziko School of Cuisine and Catering, in the heart of Langa township on the outskirts of Cape Town.
The ceremony and honours lunch, attended by Italian Consul in Cape Town Giulio Mignacca, Italian Ambassador to South Africa Alberto Vecchi, and Western Cape Province Premier Alan Winde, took place at the Eziko Cooking School on 29 November.
The school was founded in 1996 by Victor Mguqulwa and his wife with the specific aim of creating employment opportunities for the unemployed in the neighbourhood, empowering them to access the job market through culinary education. In 2018, a long and fruitful relationship with the Italian community began, first through La Dante Alighieri of Cape Town, then with the support of the Italian Consulate.
The school offers Master Classes in Italian cuisine taught by Italian chefs present at the Cape and also a wine pairing course supported for many years by an Italian importer of Italian wines. The school has a high success rate in finding employment for graduates at successful establishments in Cape Town's thriving restaurant industry. Consul Mignacca personally presented some 30 diplomas together with Premier Winde to students of various ages who would not have been able to pay the high fees of other catering schools.
